Wuhan's Optics Valley SkyRail, also known as the "Optics Valley Photon", is China's first commercially operated suspended monorail system, marking a milestone in urban transportation innovation. Operating since its official launch in October 2023, this cutting-edge rail system combines commuting efficiency with sightseeing appeal. The train, suspended beneath an elevated track, offers passengers a 270° panoramic view through its large side and transparent floor windows. With a maximum speed of 60 km/h and fully automated driverless technology, it serves as both a functional transit solution and a futuristic tourist attraction, earning its reputation as a sci-fi namecard for Wuhan.

Route and Infrastructure

Phase 1: The initial 10.5-kilometer route connects Jiufeng Mountain to Longquan Mountain, featuring 6 stations: Jiufengshan, Gaoxin Avenue, Gaoxin 2nd Road, Gaoxin 4th Road, Comprehensive Bonded Zone, and Longquanshan. It integrates natural and cultural landmarks such as Jiufeng National Forest Park and Longquan Mountain Ming Tomb Heritage Park.
Phase 2: Plans extend the total length to 26.7 km with 16 stations, linking scenic areas like Yanxi Lake and Niushan Lake.

 

Technological Innovations


Driverless Operation: Utilizes GOA3-grade automation (unattended but monitored) for safety and precision.
Eco-Friendly Design: Features energy-efficient technologies like permanent magnet traction, lightweight materials, and regenerative braking.
Unique Structure: The inverted track above, vehicle below design minimizes ground space usage, reducing urban congestion.

 

Sightseeing Experience


Passengers enjoy 270° views of Wuhan’s skyline, ecological corridors, and flower seas. Transparent cabins and glass-floor sections enhance immersion, particularly during sunrise, sunset, or nighttime light shows.
Key photo spots include Gaoxin Avenue Station’s futuristic architecture and the glass-bottomed cabin for aerial vistas.

 

Ticketing and Accessibility
 

Fares: Single ride (¥30), day pass (¥40), monthly pass (¥120), and group discounts. Free for seniors (65+), children under 12, and disabled individuals.
Operating Hours: 8:00 AM–8:00 PM (extended to 9:00 PM during peak seasons), with trains departing every 10 minutes.
Integration and Connectivity
Interchanges with Metro Line 11 and the L2 tram facilitate seamless travel. Self-driving tourists can park at Jiufengshan Station (¥5/hour) or Guanggu Administrative Center (free for 3 hours).
