GUIDE OF VISIT

Hanzheng Street, hailed as the "First Street under Heaven", is Wuhan's historic commercial hub with over 500 years of history. Located in Hankou’s bustling Qiaokou District, it stretches 3.2 kilometers from Yudaimen (Jade Belt Gate) in the west to Jijiazui in the east, where it intersects with Minzu Road . Once the lifeline of early Wuhan commerce, it thrived as a distribution center for goods and evolved into a modern wholesale and retail marketplace.
Jijiazui, situated at the eastern end of Hanzheng Street, marks the boundary between Qiaokou and Jianghan Districts. Historically a vital port area, it is now a bustling zone for festive goods and daily commodities, embodying Wuhan’s grassroots commercial culture.

Hanzheng Street and Jijiazui

Hanzheng Street

Historical Evolution:
Originating in the Ming Dynasty (1465–1487), Hanzheng Street emerged after the Han River’s course shifted, creating a strategic hub at the confluence of the Yangtze and Han Rivers. By the Qing Dynasty, it became the official "Government Street", hosting guildhalls, temples, and government offices.
During the Ming and Qing eras, it expanded into a 15-kilometer-long commercial strip, celebrated in literature for its vibrant markets and "ten thousand merchants".
In the 1980s, it spearheaded China’s private economy revival, transforming into a national small-commodity wholesale hub. Despite recent challenges, it remains central to regional trade.
Commercial Landscape:
The street features 78 alleys and specialized markets for garments, accessories, electronics, and more. Iconic shops like Qianxiangyi Silk Store (established in the Qing Dynasty) and Ye Kaitai Pharmacy (Ming Dynasty) highlight its heritage.
Modern redevelopment includes the "Hanzheng Street Shopping Theme Park" (a $1.5 billion project) and the "International Central Service Zone," blending culture, tourism, and finance.
Cultural Significance:
Hanzheng Street symbolizes Wuhan’s mercantile spirit, with proverbs like "Goods come alive in Hankou" reflecting its historical role. It retains traditional码头 (wharf) culture, contrasting with modern high-rises.

Jijiazui
Location and Role:
Jijiazui lies at Hanzheng Street’s eastern terminus, historically a key dock for river trade. Its name, meaning "Gathering Mouth," alludes to its role as a convergence point for merchants.
In the 1990s, the Jianghan District expanded it into the "East Hanzheng Street Market," specializing in affordable festive decorations, daily goods, and souvenirs.
Modern Vibrancy:
During holidays, Jijiazui dazzles with red lanterns and ornaments, attracting locals and tourists. Shops here cater to both wholesalers and casual buyers, preserving Wuhan’s festive traditions.
It straddles old and new Wuhan, with narrow alleys and mixed-use buildings (shops below, residences above) showcasing the city’s mercantile DNA.
